In this fur-filled fiasco, one cat-loving tenant found herself caught in a hissterical standoff between her new feline friend and her roommate's sneezy boyfriend. The roommate initially agreed to see how it goes in two weeks, but apparently meant exactly two weeks on the dot. Now, her boyfriend is claiming "severe" allergic reactions… even when he's not in the apartment. Sounds a little pawssuspicious.

This cat parent has gone above and beyond. Vacuuming, purifying, spritzing, and even buying allergy-reducing food that takes weeks to kick in. Meanwhile, the boyfriend refuses to try allergy meds, acting like Claritin is contraband. The roommate's demands for the cat's eviction have reached full catastrophe levels, but really, how much power does an off-site boyfriend have in a shared apartment?

In the end, it's a classic clash of roommates, boundaries, and one very adored cat caught in the middle. With patience and compromise, there's still hope for a peaceful paws treaty.

    I foolishly said that if in a a week or two after trying the stuff to reduce allergens then I'd see about rehoming the cat. I know this was dumb, and it was dumb for both of us to agree to this as I don't think I could ever actually get rid of a cat like that, especially one that is as sweet and cute and perfect as mine.   • If the boyfriend doesn’t even live there, it’s a bit strange for him to be making demands. He’s practically a guest. Guests don’t get veto power over resident cats or cuddle privileges.

    Her bf does not live there though and so his allergies should not factor above your desire to have a cat (that otherwise would be acceptable to your roommates and in terms of your lease.)

    QuincyMade Look, just a guys opinion. But I think you may be being a bit insensitive here. The terms were the terms. And if you meant longer. You should've said that... I don't mean to come off cruel. But, I think you gotta honor your side of the deal. It's going to hurt your pride a little bit. But you said two weeks and the roommate agreed.

    I'd be more lenient if the cat was already there. But it wasn't. You have to be courteous to your roommate. Even if it's just to appease her SO. Once again, it was an agreement in place about it.

  • The real issue here seems to be the agreement itself. If it’s not resolved, it could cause roommate tension. Try sitting down with her to talk things through and find another solution.

  • Maybe you could compromise by keeping the cat in another room when he visits, or he could just take allergy meds before coming over. Seems like a fair middle ground for everyone.
